Emily E was born in raised in Woostah, Mass, which us Midwestern-types mistakenly pronounce as Worcester, because THAT’S HOW IT’S SPELLED. She moved to Chicago in 1997 for college and immediately made herself at home in the underground music scene. She landed a coveted job at Reckless Records where she learned so much about all sorts of genres, and even more on how to roll her eyes at mansplain-y customers. She went on to be a founder of Girls Rock! Chicago, a day camp that teaches female & non binary identifying kids how to rock out (it’s truly magical). Her first concert was Elton John when she was 6 years old, so it makes sense that she saw the value in encouraging kids to get into music.
While her favorite styles are psychedelic music (particularly from Asia, Europe, and Africa), soul music, and ‘pretty much anything you’d hear in Ocean’s 11, 12, and/or 13’, girl can get down to Ke$ha like the rest of us. She currently lives in a big ol’ rambly house in Berwyn with her husband, Joseph, and their dogs, Dolly (Parton) & DeeDee (Ramone).
Emily has a Ph.D. in communication with a focus on how freeform radio DJs choose music for their audiences, so to say that she has spent A LOT of time thinking about the perfect playlist is an understatement. Now, the only thing I need to figure out is should she be DJ Dr. Emily E or Dr DJ Emily E?
